How many hashtags should a YouTube video have?

, 5 min read

Three. That is how many YouTube displays, however many you write. The stack of fifteen you have seen under somebody else's video is not fifteen hashtags working. It is three doing a job and the rest sitting in the description.

There is a hard ceiling as well, and it is not the number you have probably read. Here is the whole mechanic, from YouTube's own help page.

Where hashtags actually appear

Two places, and only one of them is prominent.

  • Above the video title. YouTube's wording: out of all the hashtags you add to the video's description, up to three will appear by your video title.
  • In the description itself. The rest do not vanish — they stay in the description, and hashtags in the title and description link to a results page featuring other videos sharing the hashtag.

You can also type a hashtag straight into the title. The page's instruction is to enter a # symbol in the title or description and start typing the topic.

Which three get shown is not up to you

The common advice is that the first three hashtags in your description are the ones promoted above the title. That is not what the page says.

"Out of all the hashtags you add to the video's description, up to three hashtags that are considered most engaging will appear by your video title."

Most engaging, not first. YouTube picks. So reordering your list is not the lever it is sold as, and the useful move is the boring one: write hashtags you would be happy to see promoted, because any of them might be.

What happens if you use too many

This is the part worth knowing, and it works like YouTube's chapter rules — all or nothing, with no warning anywhere.

"If a video or playlist has more than 60 hashtags, we'll ignore each hashtag on that content. Over-tagging may result in the removal of your video from your uploads or from search."

Read the second sentence twice. Losing the links is the mild outcome; the page also says over-tagging may get the video removed from your uploads or from search. That is a far bigger consequence than the one people are usually weighing when they decide to add a few more.

The number everybody repeats

You will read almost everywhere that the limit is fifteen, and that going over fifteen makes YouTube ignore all of them.

We fetched the help page on 30 August 2026. It says 60. The behaviour people describe is real and documented — pass the ceiling and every hashtag on the video is ignored. The number attached to it in most advice is not the number on the page.

We are not going to tell you fifteen was never the figure; we cannot see the page's history and neither can you. We are telling you what it says today, and linking it, so the check takes one click rather than our word.

Either way the ceiling is not a target. Three is the display limit. Hashtags four through sixty buy no placement above the title at all.

Do hashtags actually help discovery?

Less than the effort spent on them suggests. Here is what the page claims, in full: hashtags connect your content with other videos sharing the same hashtag, they let viewers find related content via search, and they link to a results page.

Nothing on that page claims a hashtag improves ranking, reach, or how often you get recommended. We read all of it. The claim is connection and navigation, and it is worth taking at exactly that size.

It helps to picture what a hashtag actually sends someone to: a results page listing every video using it. On a huge hashtag you are one of thousands, ordered by something you do not control. On a narrow one there is less competition and less traffic. That is a real surface, and it is not a growth lever.

On the neighbouring tags page, YouTube ranks the fields for you: your video's title, thumbnail, and description are more important pieces of metadata for your video's discovery (Add tags to your YouTube videos). Hashtags live inside two of those fields. They are not a substitute for either.

What to do

  • Write three, and make them count. Three is what can be displayed, and YouTube chooses which, so all three should be ones you want seen.
  • Keep them related to the video. The page is explicit that misleading or unrelated hashtags may result in the removal of your video or playlist.
  • No spaces. A hashtag cannot contain one. Join the words together.
  • Do not follow them with a wall of keywords. The same page prohibits adding ordinary descriptive tags or repetitive sentences to the description, and points at the misleading metadata policy.
  • Ignore placement advice, including ours. The page publishes no rule about where in the description hashtags must sit. The only formatting rule it gives is the one about spaces.

Why the advice drifted

Hashtags are easy to write about and easy to count, so they get treated as a dial. A number that goes up feels like work being done, and fifteen hashtags look more like effort than three.

The fields YouTube names as more important are judgement calls. Harder to write a listicle about, harder to measure, and where the difference actually sits.

What packaged does about it

Hashtags arrive as their own block, next to the title and description, generated from your transcript in about a minute. You copy the block or you skip it. We do not sell hashtags as the thing that will change your channel, because the platform's own page does not support that and this page would be worth less if we pretended otherwise.

What this page does not claim

  • We do not claim hashtags do nothing. They are links to a real results page, and YouTube says they help viewers find related content.
  • We do not claim the fifteen figure is invented. We claim the current help page says 60, we link it, and we would rather you checked than took our number on trust.
  • We do not claim a correct number of hashtags. YouTube publishes a display limit and a ceiling, not a recommendation, and nobody who gives you a recommendation is reading a different page.
  • We do not claim hashtags will get you views. The three fields YouTube names as more important are where that argument happens.
